A New Campground for Try Something New Thursday

We recently tried our second camping trip as a family.  It was a little, okay a lot, wet.  But a fun time was had by all.  So, if it was our 2nd trip, how does it qualify for Try Something New Thursday, you ask?  We were at a new campground!

We didn’t want to go far from home, but wanted to be able to enjoy the out of doors, so we headed to Attica, Michigan (Yeah, I had never heard of it either).  It is near Lapeer, Michigan.

Attica Pines Campground is run by a family and is very family friendly!  It was a great experience.

There was beautiful lake/pond that the girls fished in.  They each caught one fish!

We explored two play areas.

Huge dirt and rock piles for climbing…Do you know how dirty two little girls can get with muddy piles to slide down?

We had bonfires and collected sticks for the fires.

We played tether ball, took hikes and had lots of fun.  You should check out Attica Pines Campground!  It is a great family get away!

Bead fun for Try Something New Thursday

Recently the girls got a bead kit that looked like fun.  Without instructions.

Hubby said to put all the little beads on the form

It took a long time.

Caitlyn was totally into it

Patrice, not so much.

Caitlyn made up for it with her enthusiasm

Sue was not so interested either, but mama kept at it.

Hubby also said we  had to put it in the microwave to meld the pieces together

This did NOT work out, we had to call someone for directions.

Turns out, you had to IRON it.  Glad we found it out before mine uh, Sue’s got damaged…

What have you tried lately?  Did it turn out?  Link and show it off whether it was a flop or a fantastic success.

Camping with Three Little Girls for Try Something New Thursday

As you likely know, last week Blogger was having some trouble and it was impossible to post on Thursday, so this is a week late…

For Mother’s Day we tried something very new.  We went camping with our three little girls.  It was great.  The weather was perfect.  The drive to and from went well.  I got to visit several college friends.  I did a 5k race and accomplished my best time ever.  It was a success!

Improvise a Craft for Try Something New Thursday

I’m not the craftiest mama on the block.  Not by a looooong shot.  I need instructions and pictures to picture out projects.  But I enjoy doing them with my girls, a lot.  The girls got this pipe cleaner craft book for Easter and have been bugging me to play with it.  It has cute colored punch outs to make into window clings with included pipe cleaners and suction cups.  So we set out to make some window friends.

Each girl chose a fun punch out to do.  All was going well, until we found some of the suction cups were missing.  A lot of them for that matter.  This did not phase the girls at all, they just wanted to play with it, so we improvised a craft.

Making Ice Cream for Try Something New Thursday

It was suggested by a couple people that us girls might have fun making ice cream.  I’m not sure the girls had fun, but it turned out!!!  I am quite shocked.

I again found the recipe in The Ulitmate Book of Kid Concoctions by John E. Thomas and Danita Pagel.

You need:

2 Tablespoons sugar
1 Cup milk
1/2 Teaspoon vanilla
1 pint or sandwhich size ziploc bag
1 gallon size ziploc bag
6 Tablespoons rock/ice cream salt

Fill gallon size bag 1/2 full of ice.  Add rock salt.  Mix sugar, milk and vanilla in small ziploc bag.  Place small bag inside gallon size bag.  Shake bag(s) for 5-7 minutes.  Pull out baggie of ice cream.

* Pictures of cute babies always optional, always recommended!

Caitlyn ate two bites of her, Sue maybe 8 bites and they were done.  Not sure if they were just too tired or it wasn’t fancy enough, but it was ice cream.  Mama is satisfied.

Paper Lanterns for Try Something New Thursday

I will admit, this last week was a little light on fun projects.  I spent most of the time we would normally do projects, working on sewing.  I made a babywearing wrap and started a nursing cover.  I don’t care to admit how much tv the girls watched in order to allow me to get those things done and underway.

But we did do one fun thing.  The girls found a pattern for making a paper lantern on Nick Jr and asked if we could make one.  Sure can!

What Will We Find–Try Something New Thursday

We have been kicking around an idea for a while.  We’ve been thinking about it but we weren’t sure how brave we were or what we would find.  And I thought it would be a long project that would take days to complete.  But Saturday I had lots of nervous energy that hubby decided to capitalize on…so we plunged in…and found…

Hardwood floors.  Beautiful hardwood floors is what we found under the carpet in our living room and hallway.  We used my nervous energy to try something very new for me, we removed the carpet in all but the bedrooms.

My hubby is amazing.  There is not a project he is afraid to undertake and he isn’t afraid to let me try new things too.  He has pulled up carpet and refinished wood floors before.  I definitely have not.  I don’t know anyone else in my life that would even think of letting or having me help with such a project.

It was awesome.  It was awesome doing such a project with my hubby and felt really awesome to have him believe in my ability to do it!

We are thrilled with what wonderful shape the floors are in.  It was actually a very easy project.  I thought it would take days; who knew we could finish it between Patrice’s nursings?!

I saw this one and just had to add it, isn’t it about the sweetest thing you ever saw?

Caitlyn and Sue helped.  They got out quite a few nails and staples.

I am demolition mommy!

Done just in time to feed Miss Patrice

Stuie is not so sure he likes the look of things now.

Making Paint, Yes Again for Try Something New Thursday

My girls love to paint and, if the fun craft books I bought are any indication, they are not alone.  There are so many fun paint making ideas.  This time we tried Milky Way Paint.  Again from The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions 2 by John E. and Danita Thomas.

What you need:

1/2 cup non fat dry milk
1/2 cup water
food coloring

Mix water and milk completely.  Divide into a few containers.  Add food coloring for desired hues.  Paint.  They take about 2 hours to dry.  And be careful about where you put them.  The pictures will stick to the table if there is lots of paint on them.

This was a great, quick project!  We will definitely do it again.

*As always, cute baby is optional, but highly recommended!

Attempt #2 for a Try Something New Project

Well we had to try something new twice this week, because the first project was a bust.  Well, okay, it tastes okay, but looks ridiculous.  We tried to make a jello aquarium.  Your supposed to make blue jello and put gummy fish in it and if you want to get real fancy, put licorice laces in for sea weed and grapes for gravel.  The book said to make the jello then add the fish after it set.  That seemed like it would mess up the jello, so I thought I would add the fish after the jello started to set but not when fully done.  Well, I added one early and it just sunk.  Looked like a fish bowl with a dead fish.  Appealing.  So then I waited until it was set to add the others and just as I feared, it only served to mess up the jello.  So this project was a bust.

On to project 2–Crazy pretzels.  This one was easy, fun and yummy!  Though it might have been a little above Sue’s age.

I again found a project in The Ultimate Book of Kid Concotions 2 by John E. and Danita Thomas.

What you need:
1 package yeast
1 tablespoon sugar
1 1/2 cups warm water
4 cups flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 beaten egg

Mix water and yeast together until yeast dissolves.  Add salt, sugar and flour.  Mix and knead dough until smooth.  Roll and twist pretzels in to letters, numbers, any silly shapes.

Lay on greased cookie sheet.  brush with egg, sprinkle with salt.  Bake at 425 for 12-15 minutes.  (They took closer to 17 minutes in my oven).

They turned out really yummy and have almost all been eaten.

*As always, pictures of cute baby are optional, but highly recommended.

Try Something New–Make Soap Dough

Continuing our series of Try Something New and within that, our experiments with different types of “play dough” (click here to learn how to make peanut butter play dough), this week we made “Super Soapy Dough” from the book The Ultimate Book of Kid Concoctions 2 by John E. and Danita Thomas.

The recipe calls for:

2 cups flour
1/2 cup salt
1 Tablespoon liquid soap
food coloring

Mix flour, salt and soap.  Start adding water to form dough ball, add food coloring as you mix to get the color you want.  Mix into ball.  You may need to add flour to it if it gets too sticky.

Have Fun!
